THE AME Church is divided into regional districts. Bishops are the head of the District. Bishops are elected at an international conference (General Conference) that meets every 4 years. Bishops are assigned to a District by an Episcopal Committee and serve for up to two 4-year terms.

Holy Trinity AME Church is located within the boundaries of the Third Episcopal District.

Payne Seminary traces its origins to 1844 when the Ohio Conference of the AME Church was authorized to build a seminary and manual training school. As a result Union Seminary opened in 1847, which led to the establishment of Wilberforce University in 1862 and Payne Seminary in 1891.

Wilberforce University is the nation's oldest private, historically black University owned and operated by African Americans. Its roots trace back to its founding in 1856, a period of American history marred by the physical bondage of people of African descent.

The Christian Recorder is the oldest existing periodical published by African-Americans in the United States whose existence dated before the Civil War. The Christian Recorder has been a faithful voice for the disenfranchised and the oppressed. It was a strong and vocal opponent of slavery and repeatedly addressed the biblical and moral issues of slavery while encouraging black consciousness.

The Department of Christian Education of the AME Church is responsible for resourcing this global denomination for faith formation and leadership development throughout the lifespan for faithful and effective discipleship. As the Ephesian Epistle speaks of the variety of gifts and callings, it is through the variety of ministries, which make up the Department of Christian Education that the teaching ministry of the church is carried out.
